You are not alone in this
Every jazz listener stumbles on that friend who hates or doesn’t listen to jazz. I know I know, it’s quite frustrating when you hear that friend say that jazz is just making sounds. But there needs to be some ways to drag your friend(s) from the hating jazz trend and get them to the good side.
Well, in this blog post we will present some ways of turning your friends into jazz lovers or even to appreciate jazz little by little. FIRST RULE, don’t and I repeat don’t force jazz music on the jazz haters because they will think you are trying your hardest to convince them. See it a bit like flirting with your crush, you can not be to aggressive and pushy because you will turn them away. Just be laidback and create the right atmosphere for jazz or the sub-genres of jazz to be played.
Most of the time sub-genres work the best
We also have the jazz listeners who only listen to Jazz funk, Bebop, Bossanova, Latin Jazz and more. Most of the time the most seasoned jazz listeners you know now began like that. If I’m honest myself, my love for jazz rekindled when I heard Berlioz. The biggest problem that we have is that jazz is turning into a snobfest, where only old over qualified boring men can enjoy jazz and tell which way jazz is going or even gatekeep jazz, for the sake of. That’s why sub-genres are always refreshing to hear because young people rebel against the snob establishment. And those rebellions who create entire new sub-genres are what we need to pull more people and “jazz hater” into the jazz vortex.
Step 1: Start to identify which genres the “Hater” Likes
Just what I said before sub-genres work, so when you identified the genre they liked the most then you can start to get to work.
Here I will make a list of sub-genres that match the genres the “hater” likes.
- Rap or Hiphop – Jazz Rap : Artists to show or let the “hater” listen: A Tribe Called Quest And MF DOOM
- Pop – Contemporary jazz : Artist to show or let the “hater” listen: Robert Glasper And Kamasi Washington
- R&B – Nu Jazz: Artist to show or let the “hater” listen: Yussef Dayes And Moses Boyd
- Rock – Jazz fusion: Artist to show or let the “hater” listen: Herbie Hancock And Chick Corea
Now here you go, in the next step I will tell you how to implement this step. But be 100% sure that “The HATER” likes the genre.

Step 2: Pick the right sub-genre for the ambiance you created
Now this step is important, from here it is make or break… And I know what you are thinking, “no, setting the right ambiance sounds weird and I’m not in love with my friend”. I don’t mean a romantic ambiance but the right ambiance for what you guys are doing at that moment, but of course if you are in love just put some Nu Jazz on and that will do the trick. Now for the people who are not in love, I got you. Let’s say that you are cooking together with the sunset in the background and a candle slowly burning. Some Jazz house or Nu Jazz would be the best to match that ambiance. And to be specific, the artists Berlioz and Yussef Dayes are great for these type of moments. But let’s say you are chatting, babbling and having fun with your friend then a good suggesting would be contemporary jazz and specifically Robert Glasper – Freeze Tag. But for the more cool/tough type of meetings, so like gaming, wrestling, roasting each other, smoking, eating junk food Jazz rap is the best match. A Tribe Called Quest with their song electric relaxation is really a song for every setting I just wrote, but for the cool/tough type of meetings the best.
Step 3: Now step off the gas
You read it right. Don’t do anything anymore. You just let time do the work, and let them think that they just discovered a new artist and their music. Because as soon as you start talking about you should add this song or hear this artist they will back off, because they see you as a jazz lover and they hate or don’t like that genre. This method mostly works in one month, but if it doesn’t work you can’t return your three or four minutes you used to read this post. So this is not false advertisement…..
I hoped you enjoyed reading this post 🙂 And let me know in the comments if you are going to apply this method.
